Try these eight hacks to super-power your memory.

Pay attention

 It may seem pretty common sense but if you want to remember something, you need to pay attention to it in the first place.  Skip this step and all the following tips will not be of any help for you.

Visualize it

65% of the world population is believed to be visual.  Your chances  to recall something will be higher if whatever you read you try to associate it with an image — the sillier the image you can think of, the easier it will be to recall later.

Try brain games

 Brain-stimulating games like sudoku. Lumosity and crosswords are believed to activate synapses in the whole brain, which impact positively the memory areas and memory retention.

 

Create a Memory Palace

Psychologists John O’Keefe and Lynn Nadel explain this in The Hippocampus as a Cognitive Map:

In this technique the subject memorizes the layout of some building, or the arrangement of shops on a street, or any geographical entity which is composed of a number of discrete loci. When desiring to remember a set of items the subject literally ‘walks’ through these loci and commits an item to each one by forming an image between the item and any distinguishing feature of that locus. Retrieval of items is achieved by ‘walking’ through the loci, allowing the latter to activate the desired items.

You can put this in action by  “walking” through the rooms of your house or apartment mentally while attaching information to each room. Later you can try to remember all the information be visually returning to each room.

 

Take a nap

Taking naps boosts learning and memory, according to NASA sleep researchers. A  2008 study also showed that brain activity in individuals who take regular naps is  much higher all day long than in those who don’t do it.

Label people

Whenever you meet someone for the first time, visualize their names written across their foreheads. Even better results have been found when individuals imagined the names being written in their favorite color marker, according to a CNN report.

Eat your Omega-3s

The regular consumption of omega-3s enhances working memory in healthy young individuals. Consuming foods that are high in Omega-3s fat also lowers your risk of developing mental diseases such as Alzheimer’s, according to a 2012 Columbia University study.
