The Spanish Subjunctive

Spanish Subjunctive: Mission Impossible?

Is the Spanish subjunctive impossible to learn for English speakers?

Let’s face it. For those who learn Spanish, the Spanish subjunctive can be a nightmare. If you have studied Spanish before, this video will resonate with you. If you haven’t, it will give you a great idea of what most students  go through when they study the Spanish subjunctive:

Subjunctive Spanish or Spanish Subjunctive?! I’m Confused!

What is the Spanish Subjunctive?

If we take Wikipedia, we can say that …

The subjunctive is a grammatical mood found in many languages. Subjunctive forms of verbs are typically used to express various states of unreality such as wish, emotion, possibility, judgment, opinion, obligation, or action that has not yet occurred; the precise situations in which they are used vary from language to language. The subjunctive is an irrealis mood (one that does not refer directly to what is necessarily real) – it is often contrasted with the indicative, which is a realis mood.

Confused? Well, you are not alone!

Most learners find the Spanish Subjunctive very hard, to the point that even very advanced Spanish learners and even teachers and professors who are not native Spanish speakers fail to use them correctly. The good news is that it is usually made seem more complex than it really is. Why is this so? Well, it’s a huge topic! In an effort to make it more comprehensible for learners, the Spanish subjunctive is simplified and reduced to just very simplistic rules.

While it works great in the classroom in which all the sentences the students get are based on those simplified constructions, those students that venture beyond the classroom soon discover that there are way more exceptions than rules. This, of course, is not truly the case. It’s caused by the unreal simplification shown in the classroom in which all examples were basic and tried to fit a very limited rule. Let’s see this in more detail in the following video:

The High Price of Cheap Information on the Subjunctive Spanish – Spanish Subjunctive (Part 1)

As you can see, most problems to understand the Spanish subjunctive stem from the fact that students never get to see the big picture. They just see about 25% of the whole picture and make decisions based on this tiny percentage. No wonder why they think there are more exceptions than rules! They never even learned all the rules!

The High Price of Cheap Information on the Subjunctive Spanish – Spanish Subjunctive (Part 2)

How many of you have studied the subjunctive Spanish for ages and never even heard the word “subordinate clauses”? Although “subordinate clauses,” “noun clauses”, “adjective clauses”, “si clauses” is technical jargon, these are basic concepts that once you know them will simplify your life enormously. So in an effort to feed students more digestible bite-sized portions of this grammar item, most teachers are doing a disservice to their students dooming them to never really get this essential concept from the Spanish language.

The High Price of Cheap Information on the Subjunctive Spanish – Spanish Subjunctive (Part 3)

This third part of the subjunctive Spanish report blew my mind when I saw it for the first time. And it never ceases to amaze me. After years of living in the dark ages of the Spanish language, I could finally see the light. The millions of unpredictable exceptions I had, were actually unreal. The Spanish language follows a very predictable, mathematical pattern. If you know the rules, the Spanish subjunctive is really predictable, like a math equation. It’s crazy to think that with so many materials out there, such few people really get it.

Of course, all native Spanish speakers use it without a problem, but even native Spanish speaking teachers have a hard time to explain how the subjunctive Spanish works. Why? Well, it’s their language. They can use it, but when they need to study in order to teach it, they just read the books available in the market.

The problem with Grammar Books that teach the Subjunctive Spanish

Almost all Spanish grammar book covers the Spanish Subjunctive – Subjunctive Spanish. The problem is, that as this is a such a huge topic, and grammar books need to cover all other aspects of grammar, they can only devote a few pages to the Spanish subjunctive. For that reason, the explanations are too technical for most learners to understand. And to make matters worse, as we saw before , the explanations are simplified to a few basic concepts. They just teach about 25% of what the subjunctive is all about, and then they provide just a couple of exercises based on that 25% of

They just teach about 25% of what the subjunctive is all about, and then they provide just a couple of exercises based on that 25% of information. Most students that go through the book and finish working on the exercises, have the false idea that they “know” the subjunctive Spanish. However, the problems begin when they see that in real life people use it all the time and in all kinds of situations that were not originally contemplated in their study materials. That’s why they assume they must be exceptions. The problem is, there seem to be more exceptions than rules. It’s crazy and luckily, false.

The good news: the Spanish subjunctive can be mastered!

In my quest to learn the subjunctive Spanish, I came across a website that specializes in this elusive Spanish Grammar Topic. Unlike the rest of grammar books, this is not just a book but a complete Spanish Subjunctive eBook and Spanish Subjunctive Video Program that goes from zero knowledge of the Spanish subjunctive to pro, every step of the way. The explanations are extremely clear and simple to grasp AND, complex concepts are broken down in little parts. In addition, each of those parts is practiced extensively individually, so once they are put together, an otherwise hard topic just makes common sense to the student. I’ve been a lifelong Spanish learner.

In my more than 30 years studying Spanish, I had never been able to get a solid understanding of the subjunctive Spanish. The Spanish Subjunctive Video Program just changed my life. And the life of some of my friends who were going through the same situation. Today, about a year after doing the program, I can say I do know how the subjunctive Spanish really works and even if I make some mistakes here and there, I am more than 90% on target whenever I use it spontaneously. and getting better each day. I have no association with the creator of the program, so this mention of it is from the heart and not because of any commission or affiliate program whatsoever.

If you are struggling to use the Spanish subjunctive, check out Julio Foppoli’s program. I’m sure not only will you love it, but soon enough your Spanish will reach new heights.

Growing when facing crisis

Crisis: Opportunity to grow?

Could a Crisis be a Great  Opportunity to grow?

For the Chinese, the meaning of the word CRISIS is associated with danger and opportunity. For this reason, it may indicate that the crisis is an instance of change or great for taking a decision on which way to choose. Do you think so too? Could Everything breaking, falling or suffering from an abrupt change  become a growth opportunity?

Being in the present means to refuse go somewhere else, “says Miguel Lagos, psychologist and author of” From the mind to the heart ”

On many occasions, we have heard and we saw  unexpected opportunities that come to us after going through many periods of pain, confusion and instability in our personal lives.

This depended on our attitude. Those who see it as chaos, do not participate, do not invest and lag behind their decisions. Those who see it as an opportunity, participate in paradigm shifts, invest, take risks and sacrifices and achieve some of the biggest successes ever.

Similarly, the opportunity hidden behind a crisis won’t present itself until fully recognized and accepted. How is this? When something terrible happens to me or someone close to me such as an accident, illness, pain, separation or some death it may seem like it’s not that bad or does not affect me, exerting resistance and delaying the importance of real pain and continue trapped in a sufficient. This situation, however, can be accompanied by sadness and tears, but once you have abandoned the resistance, you will find  a deep serenity and acceptance allowing you both an inner and outer transformation. Sometimes visible and immediately, at deeper levels initially and more obvious changes later.

The author refers alongside other issues to the existence of the “common man” and “spiritual warrior” who live in each of us and faces them differently to crises giving a present totally unequal.

OCD

Tips to Beat Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Today we’ll learn 6 amazing tips to Beat Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Nowadays many people claim very lightly that they have OCD. It seems like a fashionable phrase they use without really knowing the extent of what OCD is. So before we start, let’s define OCD.

Wikipedia defines OCD as…

Obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental disorder where people feel the need to check things repeatedly, perform certain routines repeatedly (called “rituals”), or have certain thoughts repeatedly. People are unable to control either the thoughts or the activities for more than a short period of time.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is a very debilitating condition which can prevent you from enjoying your life. OCD forces you to go back and checking everything you did just in case.

As Wikipedia further explains:

Common activities include hand washing, counting of things, and checking to see if a door is locked. Some may have difficulty throwing things out. These activities occur to such a degree that the person’s daily life is negatively affected.[1] Often they take up more than an hour a day.[2] Most adults realize that the behaviors do not make sense.[1] The condition is associated with tics, anxiety disorder, and an increased risk of suicide.[2][3]

However, here are some tips that will help you keep your OCD in check:

1. Realize You Have An Issue and make a conscious decision to change.

2. Analyze the issues you encounter and start to make changes if necessary.

3. Make checklists of the things you have already done to avoid checking if you did them over and over again.

Whenever you second guess if you already did it or not, just look at your list rather than go back and physically check.

4. Be Patient!

Rome was not built in a day. This is a process that will take time. Be aware of it and do not feel frustrated if things don’t change overnight.

5. Identify Obsessive Compulsive Behavior patterns.

Whenever you find yourself falling into the OCD trap, stop yourself in your tracks, go to the list mentioned in #3 and do not indulge that compulsive behavior. In time, these instances will be less frequent until totally gone.

6. Talk To Others

There are other people suffering from OCD who will help you and try to support. Not everyone will understand, but help is out there. And the Internet is a great source of information and support. Use it to your advantage and get in touch with others going through the same. Forums can be particularly helpful for this.

Junk Food

Lose Weight by Eating Unhealthy Foods!

Did you know that you can lose Weight by Eating Unhealthy Foods?

Before we start, eating junk food regularly won’t help you in your battle against weight loss. However, for anyone following a strict diet, they offer a mental relief that enables them to move on to their next goal more optimistically and effortlessly.

We all know it’s nearly impossible to follow a perfectly healthy eating program and strict exercise plan at all times, all the time. And to make matters worse, the moment you decide to change your old unhealthy food choices for good, it’s when you start to crave for them even more.

However, not all hope is lost! Scientific research suggests that in order to follow a weight-loss diet long term nothing beats the intentional cheat day. Yes, planning to cheat is actually good!

The power of cheat days

When you know that there’s a day for eating junk, you can stay stronger the rest of the days. You can even stare at temptation in the face and smile at it, knowing that sooner or later you will get what you want. By knowing that you only have a few more days to go until you can eat whatever you want enables you to stay stronger during those tribulations. In contrast, if you think of them as “forbidden” meals forever and ever, you will crave them like crazy until you finally give in to them_ and rest assured that sooner or later you will give in!

But is there any science supporting cheat days?

Indeed there are. In one of the latest studies on weight loss carried out in Portugal, the participants were placed on a 10,500 calorie diet per week. Half of them had a cheat day which allowed them to eat whatever they wanted on Sundays.

After two weeks into the study, every single person had lost weight. What’s  interesting is that both groups had lost a similar amount of weight but those who had been allowed to cheat felt more motivated and optimistic about their future weight loss objectives. The group that had followed the plan to the T without any deviation or cheat days was craving certain foods and struggling more to continue their challenge.

According to Rita Coelho do Vale Ph.D., who was in charge of  the study,

‘…when goal-deviation behaviors are planned, that is, part of the     long-term plan they may actually help rather than hurt successful goal pursuit.’

Tips to make cheat days work for you too!

Choose any day of the week that’s good for you and stick to it!

Do not to go overboard! Enjoy a nice junky meal but that’s it. Don’t eat the same amount of it that 3 people would.

Do some extra exercise before eating the junk food.

Cheat Days Tips!

And that’s it! Do this and you’ll look trimmer than ever while enjoying that slice of pizza that you’ve been craving all week.

Time Management

Change Your Life in just 5-minutes a day!

Yes, you can Change Your Life in just 5-minutes a day!

Having trouble to get things done? Don’t worry! In this exclusive article for Brightspot.tv, we are going to show you some great tips to maximize your time and achieve more!

Set aside time to do activities that you truly love

Doing something you love can go a long way to keeping you happy, motivated and achieving more. Unfortunately, we usually do the things we hate while ignoring the ones we would really like to do. Just think about all the things you love and make sure you do at least one of them even if it’s for just 5 minutes, to begin with. You’ll see how everything is brighter after doing something like this.

Focus your top priorities

One thing is to stay busy. The other is to achieve what’s really important, your priorities. Start with your priorities and focus on the junk later.

You can do this by writing down your schedule religiously and ahead of time and make sure your priorities account for 90% of what you have to do, at the very least. And if you notice that you’re not focusing on your top priorities, make the necessary changes.

Group similar tasks together

Think of an assembly line in a factory. As the activities are the same or similar, it’s much easier to get a lot done in a short amount of time. If instead, factory workers had to stop after each task is completed and move on to a different one and then onto a different one, things would take ages to be finished. You should learn from that. Group similar tasks together, work seamlessly on all of those, and once you are done with them, just move on to another group of similarly related tasks.

Write down your deadlines

If you don’t have deadlines, you are just hoping something might get done. You are just dreaming. There’s nothing wrong with dreaming if you can turn those dreams into action. For that, nothing better than deadlines.
You need a game plan with clear goals and a deadline to achieve them. After all, a goal is a dream_ with a deadline.

Work every day on a mini-goal to get you closer to your big goal(s)

If your want to run a marathon, you can’t just wake up one day and decide to compete the following day, especially if you’ve never run before. Your goal may be to run a marathon, but you need to work daily and systematically to achieve that big goal ahead. This applies to every aspect of your life. Use it to your advantage.

Remember Everything!

How to Remember Everything!

How to remember virtually anything!

Try these eight hacks to super-power your memory.

Pay attention

It may seem pretty common sense but if you want to remember something, you need to pay attention to it in the first place.  Skip this step and all the following tips will not be of any help for you.

Visualize it

65% of the world population is believed to be visual.  Your chances  to recall something will be higher if whatever you read you try to associate it with an image — the sillier the image you can think of, the easier it will be to recall later.

Try brain games

Brain-stimulating games like sudoku. Lumosity and crosswords are believed to activate synapses in the whole brain, which impact positively the memory areas and memory retention.

Create a Memory Palace

Psychologists John O’Keefe and Lynn Nadel explain this in The Hippocampus as a Cognitive Map:

In this technique the subject memorizes the layout of some building, or the arrangement of shops on a street, or any geographical entity which is composed of a number of discrete loci. When desiring to remember a set of items the subject literally ‘walks’ through these loci and commits an item to each one by forming an image between the item and any distinguishing feature of that locus. Retrieval of items is achieved by ‘walking’ through the loci, allowing the latter to activate the desired items.

You can put this in action by  “walking” through the rooms of your house or apartment mentally while attaching information to each room. Later you can try to remember all the information be visually returning to each room.

Take a nap

Taking naps boosts learning and memory, according to NASA sleep researchers. A  2008 study also showed that brain activity in individuals who take regular naps is  much higher all day long than in those who don’t do it.

Label people

Whenever you meet someone for the first time, visualize their names written across their foreheads. Even better results have been found when individuals imagined the names being written in their favorite color marker, according to a CNN report.

Eat your Omega-3s

The regular consumption of omega-3s enhances working memory in healthy young individuals. Consuming foods that are high in Omega-3s fat also lowers your risk of developing mental diseases such as Alzheimer’s, according to a 2012 Columbia University study.

The Learning Pyramid

Remembering over 90% Of Whatever You Learn

Wish you could learn faster?

Whether you’re learning Spanish, a new instrument, or a new sport, we could all benefit from accelerated learning. But the problem is, there’s only so much time in the day.

Scientific studies show that human beings remember:

  • 5% of what learned from a lecture (i.e. school lectures)
  • 10% of what they learn from reading (i.e. textbooks, articles)
  • 20% of audio-visual (i.e. programs, videos)
  • 30% of what they see in a demonstration
  • 50% of what they learn when they engage in a group discussion.
  • 75% when they practice what they learned.
  • 90% of what they prepare to teach others

This is known as THE LEARNING PYRAMID

The Learning Pyramid
The Learning Pyramid

However, the current educational system seems to be upside down, and even after we finish school, we repeat what we learned there, which is totally wrong!
Textbooks, classroom lessons, and videos are non-interactive learning approaches. That is why 80 to 95% of that information goes in one ear and out the other.

Instead, we need to focus almost exclusively on “hands-on” methods that have proven to produce much more successful results, in significantly less time.

Active Learning Explained

This clearly suggests that:

  • If you want to learn how to speak a foreign language, you must focus on speaking with native speakers instead of relying on textbooks and videos as your primary source of information.
  • If you want to get fit, you need to work with a coach instead of reading Muscle Magazines only.
  • If you need to learn a new instrument, work wth a musician instead of online guitar lessons.

Now you know! It’s up to you take a shortcut to the most effective learning backed by science.
