However, here are some tips that will help you keep your OCD in check:

1. Realize You Have An Issue and make a conscious decision to change.

2. Analyze the issues you encounter and start to make changes if necessary.

3. Make checklists of the things you have already done to avoid checking if you did them over and over again.

Whenever you second guess if you already did it or not, just look at your list rather than go back and physically check.

4. Be Patient!

Rome was not built in a day. This is a process that will take time. Be aware of it and do not feel frustrated if things don’t change overnight.

5. Identify Obsessive Compulsive Behavior patterns.

Whenever you find yourself falling into the OCD trap, stop yourself in your tracks, go to the list mentioned in #3 and do not indulge that compulsive behavior. In time, these instances will be less frequent until totally gone.

6. Talk To Others

There are other people suffering from OCD who will help you and try to support. Not everyone will understand, but help is out there. And the Internet is a great source of information and support. Use it to your advantage and get in touch with others going through the same. Forums can be particularly helpful for this.

After two weeks into the study, every single person had lost weight. What’s  interesting is that both groups had lost a similar amount of weight but those who had been allowed to cheat felt more motivated and optimistic about their future weight loss objectives. The group that had followed the plan to the T without any deviation or cheat days was craving certain foods and struggling more to continue their challenge.

According to Rita Coelho do Vale Ph.D., who was in charge of  the study,

          ‘…when goal-deviation behaviors are planned, that is, part of the     long-term plan they may actually help rather than hurt successful goal pursuit.’
